Preventing Wrinkles by Sunscreen

As we age, our top layer skin cells become thinner and less sticky. Not only that, sebum released by the enlarged sebaceous glands are becoming less and less. Thus, moisture retention in the skin become less effective and cause dryness. In additions, as collagen production by the skin also reduces, the elasticity of the skin is greatly affectly causing wrinkles to be more prominent.

The ultraviolet rays UVA and UVB in the sun rays contributes the most in premature aging in our skin.As sunlight damages collagen fibers which is an important component in maintaining a smooth looking skin, our skin starts to show wrinkles. Free radicals from the sunlight, smoking, air pollution, habitual facial expression and gravity force can also cause wrinkles. That is why we develop wrinkles and fine lines around the jaw lines, crows feet, frown lines between eyebrows and drooping eyelids as we aged.

Sunscreen works in reducing wrinkles by blocking off the harmful effects of UVA and UVB in sunlight. Normally people chooses a sunscreen with an SPF (skin phototype) of at least 15 to protect their skin from the harmful sunlight ray. While some sunscreen or sunblock only provide protection against UVB, Hawaiian Tropic Sunblock 15 Plus provides protections against the whole spectrum of sunlight.

Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before exposing yourself to the sunlight as this is the duration needed by the skin to absorb the sunscreen. Even though the instruction mentions that sunscreen needed to be applied every 2 to 4 hours in the sun, it is more effective if you reapply it every 30 minutes. Sunscreen applied liberally and daily instead of intermittently and of a higher SPF rating has been shown to be more effective in protecting the skin. Bear in mind also you will have to reapply the sunscreen after shower, swimming and excessive sweating as no sunscreen is waterproof.

Sunscreen normally consists zinc oxide, avobenzone or titanium dioxide. An example of this is Blue Lizard Australian Suncream, SPF 30+, Sensitive The benzophenones, oxybenzone and dioxybenzone, are the second most commonly used components of sunscreens which provides protection in a certain UVA range while avobenzone provides the protection for the whole UVA range. Oxybenzone also acts as an effective UVB absorber.

The salicylates ingredients in sunscreen; homomenthyl salicylate, octyl salicylate, and triethanolamine salicylate, provide sun protection in the range of 290-315nm (UVB). They are weaker UVB absorbers than PABA and are generally added to other formulations to boost the SPF.

The cinnamates ingredient in the sunscreen blocks off UVB of the sunlight.Octyl methoxycinnamate (also known as octinoxate) and cinoxate are cinnamates, derivatives of cinnamon that provide protection in UVB. These chemicals may cause allergic reaction to certain people sensitive to cinnamates.

We suggest using a moisturizer with a SPF protection of 15 for your daily outings.Beside keeping protecting your skin from the sun,it can keep your skin moist all day long.Don't use a higher rating of SPF if not necessary as it might exacerbate signs of aging and melanomas development due to its harsher chemicals. Note that sunscreen of SPF 15 provides protection of 93% of UVB while sunscreen of SPF 30 provides 97% UVB protection. Sunscreen of a SPF 50 to 60 blocks off 98% UVB ray. As you can see, a two times increased in the SPF ratings gives you only a slight 1 to 4% increased in UVB protection.

Aerosol sunscreens may be easier to apply but it may not be effectively protecting your skin as aerosol sunscreens can loose much of its protection during the the transfer from the bottle to the skin. Do you think it you can cover your skin fully by spraying?

Check out Clean & Clear Oil Free Day Moisturizer,SPF 15 iconas it contains avobenzone, oxybenzone, octisalate and octocrylene which provides sun protection from UVA and UVB.Or you can try Rachel Perry Calendula-Cucumber Oil Free Moisturizer Sunblock SPF 15 with Echinacea

The only time you need to use a sunscreen of SPF higher than 15 is when you apply insect repellent and a sunscreen together as the insect repellent will reduce the effective of the sunscreen.
